They often say never take a nap during the day because it will cause your sleep schedule to become out of balance. They say if you take a nap during the day you’re likely to stare up at the ceiling and count sheep until 5 am the next morning.

Personally, I’ll take a nap anywhere from 10-30 minutes during the afternoon and feel refreshed and ready to accomplish any tasks for the remainder of the day.

The sleep cycle takes you into deeper periods of sleep, ultimately ending with REM sleep or rapid-eye-movement sleep. If you take a nap during the day when your body is in the REM stage of the sleep cycle for a long period, then you will have a greater chance of throwing your sleep schedule off balance.

A long nap may trick your mind into thinking the body has already received enough rest and it’s time to start a brand new day. Of course, people suffering from insomnia regard taking naps a serious issue. Insomniacs feel so tired during the day because the entire night becomes a series of naps instead of a lengthy sleep where their body has a chance to reach the most beneficial stage of the sleep cycle.

Regardless, insomniacs need to pay attention to when they take naps, and the length of time of their naps. Monitoring this is one thing they can do to help themselves overcome problems with sleep disorder.
