Insomnia – Why Are You Having Trouble Sleeping?

What exactly is insomnia?

Having insomnia means that you have difficulty either falling asleep or staying asleep, and sometimes both. As a result, when you get up in the morning you are already tired.

People suffering from the effects of insomnia usually have one or more of the following insomnia symptoms:

Sleepiness throughout the day.

Overall general tiredness.

Mild or extreme irritability.

Concentration, focus and memory problems.

Impaired motor coordination.

Some people suffer from insomnia for several days at a time while others can suffer for years. Untreated short-term insomnia may develop into chronic insomnia.

Insomnia is not limited to specific age groups, although problems with insomnia do increase as a person gets older . Physiological insomnia causes can range from circadian rhythm disorders (our internal clock is messed up), sleep-wake imbalance, to a variety of medical conditions including:

  2. Congestive heart failure
  3. Chronic pain syndrome
  4. Degenerative diseases such as Alzheimers disease

It is found that certain groups of people are more prone to developing and suffering from insomnia such as:

  1. Adolescent or young adult students
  2. Senior citizens
  3. Shift workers
  4. TRavelers
  5. Women in menopause
  6. Pregnant women
  7. People with chronic pain

Certain medications have also been associated with insomnia including some over the counter cold and asthma preparations. The prescription versions of this type of medications may also contain stimulants which will make it more difficult to sleep.

Two of the more common stimulants that can lead to sleeping problems are caffeine and nicotine. A good recommendation is to limit your caffeine use in the hours before yo go to bed, while also cutting down on the amount you have throughout the day.

Some people suffering from insomnia choose to use alcohol to help them get to sleep. This turns out to be a bad choice however since alcohol is associated with causing sleep disruption which results in your sleep being nonrefreshing.

Your ability to get a good night’s sleep can also be affected by a bed partner who snores loudly or who has periodi c leg movements.
