How to Deal with Insomnia

Can you relate to some of the following?

  • You have been to the doctor but you still can’t consistently get a good night’s sleep
  • You have rearranged the furniture in your bedroom to be in alignment with feng shui principles
  • You bought a hyper-allergenic pillow with contouring recommended to give you neck and head support
  • You have tried eye patches
  • You have inserted earplugs
  • You have bought and used varying CDs, tapes for meditation prior to going to sleep
  • You have played subliminal CDs before and during attempts to sleep
  • You have visited a psychologist/psychiatrist
  • You have tried just laying there and just enjoying relaxing

But there are still one or more problems, either with:

  • Falling asleep within a reasonable period of time
  • Staying asleep cocooned in a restful, peaceful, sleeping state
  • Having fitful nights, and/or
  • Waking

Insomnia is a merciless state.

You know you can’t sleep that will perpetuate the insomniac state you are experiencing.

Like any other state we experience, there is a lesson to be learnt from it. In other words, states are teachers.

Thus, insomnia is a teacher.

There is an adage: We either pay attention, or we pay with pain.

To anybody who has suffered or is suffering from insomnia, they know it is pain.

It is a pain that no method whether chemical or chemical-free can cure. Even if you take a tablet or use a liquid, the effect is temporary, perhaps a few hours.

These cure the symptom but do not address the cause.

The cause is something (some things) in your waking life, and only you can do the fixing.

There are two sayings to be considered here:

  1. Awareness (of the root cause of an issue) is 80% toward a solution, and
  2. A problem well stated is a problem half solved

The challenge is to identify what is causing your insomnia, and for this you need to go deep inside you and ask you subconsci ous mind for assistance.

If you are not used to conversing with that huge part of you, your subconscious mind, then the answers may be a bit slow in coming.

This is then a good time to start the habit of accessing the incredible resource that you have within you that you are not using on a daily basis, your subconscious mind.

Experts have identified that we are made up of 10% conscious mind and 90% nonconscious platform.

By nonconscious platform I mean the unconscious mind and the subconscious mind.

Therefore, if you are not accessing your subconscious mind and using you inner wisdom in your daily experiences, you are cutting yourself short of experiencing a fulfilling life on a daily basis by 90%.

Is that what you want?

If we really want to admit it, we always ‘know’ what we are doing that is hindering us from living our life the way we want it to be, even if at the moment the solution is buried deep down.

Relax and with a smile on your face and an attitude of enquiring awe, ask yourself the question:

“What is the lesson I’m meant to learn from having insomnia?”

Whenever you ask your subconscious mind for help, charge that question with a positive emotion.

As human beings, anything we do always has an emotion attached to it, whether subtle or overt.

After you have asked yourself this question, wait for a word or words to come through you intuition, gut-feeling, subconscious mind.

Write down whatever pops into your mind, don’t judge what comes, just write it down.

Ideas won’t stop there, you’ll have ongoing inspiration until you pay attention and do something about it.

We consist of a mental plane, a physical plane and a spiritual plane.

If any of these are not in harmony, we have discord in our life.

Of particular importance is our spiritual plane, because it is instrumental in the outward manifestation of our mental and physical states.

My reference to spiritual is not dependent upon any denominational be liefs. I refer to each person’s spiritual persuasion, whatever it is for her/him.

Insomnia could be telling you one of the following:

  • Just like a flooded river cannot be contained, so a flooded mind is like a torrent and will keep you awake at night
  • Your inner being, your soul may be yearning for some kind of release from present circumstances you are in
  • Your insomnia is a way for your soul to alert you to altering the way you look at your career, or to find a new one
  • Is there a hobby or other activity you are suppressing from expressing that would give you fulfilment?
  • Are you in a relationship, or relationships which need reviewing?

Only you can work out what it is you need to change in your life to say goodbye to insomnia forever.

That is the challenge, but you must make a start.

Insomnia didn’t just happen; it’s been a long time coming.

It’s the result of lengthy deafness to lessons you need to heed.

Begin by listening to your inn er voice.

One of the beliefs inherent in NLP is the presupposition that:

“We have all the resources within us to be, have and do anything we want to live the life of our dreams.”
