How long can a person take Ambien for sleep disorder?

Researchers do not know exactly why people need sleep, but we do know that lack of sleep can kill. Humans deprived of sleep for long periods begin hallucinating and develop other mental problems.
Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by chronic problems falling asleep, staying asleep or only sleeping for several hours and being wake unable to fall back to sleep. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Both organic and non-organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder.

It can be caused by another disorder, by changes in the sleep environment, by the timing of sleep, or by stress. Its consequences – sleepiness and impaired psychomotor performance – are similar to those of sleep deprivation. Researchers do not know exactly why people need sleep.

Ambien is a sedative, also called a hypnotic. It affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause sleep problems (insomnia). Ambien is used to treat insomnia. This medication causes relaxation to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. It is considered to be very safe as it does not stay in your body very long (shorter half life).

Ambien may cause a severe allergic reaction. Stop taking Ambien and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Ambien will make you fall asleep. Never take this medication during your normal waking hours, unless you have a full 7 to 8 hours to dedicate to sleeping.

When I was prescribed with Ambien CR (Time Released), I noticed that I was sleepy for much more than 8 hours and I also began to have trouble with my breathing when doing any type of exercise. My kids and I figured out when I was first prescribed Ambien CR and when I first noticed the problems breathing, so at my next visit to my doctor, I asked to be put back on just plain Ambien. Well, in about two weeks all my breathing problems were gone. I have since noticed that they have added on their TV ads trouble breathing as a side effects.

Ambien can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. You may still feel sleepy the morning after taking the medication. Until you know how this medication will affect you during waking hours, be careful if you drive, operate machinery, pilot an airplane, or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Do not drink alcohol while you are taking this medication. It can increase some of the side effects of Ambien, including drowsiness. Ambien may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Ambien should never be shared with another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it.

I have taken Ambien for several years and my doctor does not seem to be concerned, so for a sleep disorder it can be taken as long as needed to get the sleep disorder reset. Since my sleep problems started from working nightshift, it may take years to get right again for me. It is not on the list of Schedule I drugs, as the benzodiazepines, and many other tranquilizers are.

The product inserts with Ambien say that it should not be taken more than 5 weeks or as long as your doctor tells you to. So, how long can a person take Ambien for sleep disorder? As long as your doctor tells you too as it is a prescribed medication.
