Exercise helps sleep

Exercise helps with sleep. Especially if the exercise is done early in the morning or afternoon. This helps your body become healthier and a healthy body is usually a body that sleeps well at night. A Harvard study found that daily yoga for eight weeks improved total sleep time, and the time to fall asleep

But because insomnia can be the symptom of other medical problems, please check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Researchers do not know exactly why people need sleep, but they do know that lack of sleep can kill. In research studies, rats normally live two to three years, but if rats are totally deprived of sleep, they only live about five weeks. They also develop sores, their immune systems do not work well and their body temperature drops. Humans deprived of sleep for long periods begin hallucinating and develop other mental problems.

A common health problem and one that I suffer from is fibromyalgia. This condition causes a person to ache all over and feel like I have a case of the flu – only it doesn’t go away. Fibro is also very hard to diagnose because all of your blood tests will be normal. At times, every muscle in my body shouts out in pain. In addition, I feel devoid of energy as though someone has unplugged my power supply. While the severity of symptoms fluctuates from person to person, fibromyalgia may resemble a post-viral state. This similarity is the reason experts believe that fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) may actually be the same condition. Gulf War syndrome also overlaps with FMS/CFS. Recent studies have linked fibromyalgia with (you guessed it) sleep problems.

Most fibromyalgia patients have an associated sleep disorder called the alpha-EEG anomaly. This condition was uncovered in a sleep lab with the aid of a machine that recorded the brain waves of patients during sleep. Researchers found that the majority of fibromyalgia patients could fall asleep without much trouble, but their deep level (or stage 4) sleep was constantly interrupted by bursts of awake-like brain activity. Patients appeared to spend the night with one foot in sleep and the other one out of it. So light exercise is sometime advised for these patients as well as keeping a fibro log, so you can record the effect. Too much exercise can have the wrong effect for fibro patients. While exercise such as walking in a swimming pool has proven to help.

This is an example will the insomnia has caused the medical problem and another reason why a person with chronic problems sleeping should meet with their family doctor.

So, the subject of exercise helping with sleep is debatable and you should consult your physician first.
